Mark Magaña, president and founder of Green Latinos, knows how important it is to fight for a culture’s way of life. Growing up in Los Angeles, Mark saw how many of Latino communities brought their culture with them and preserved it – rather than being displaced by forces outside of their control.

Protecting the rights of indigenous communities is why Mark is so passionate about standing up for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The Coastal Plain of the Refuge are the birthing grounds of the Porcupine Caribou Herd, a critical source of sustenance for the Gwich’in – an Alaska Native community that depends on the bounty of the Refuge to maintain their way of life.

That passion towards supporting indigenous peoples led Mark to join a number of other supporters in contributing to the book We Are the Arctic. He’s also shared his voice in a moving video about his recent trip to the Refuge.

The forces acting against the Gwich’in are not outside of our control. Big Oil’s allies have had their sights set on drilling in the Refuge for decades, but we have the power to stop them. That’s why Mark and others are calling on Congress and the president to protect the Refuge once, and for all. Will you join us?
